Abstract
The Effectiveness of a Cognitive-Behavioral Counseling Program in Developing Self-Esteem and Reducing Generalized Anxiety Level Among Deaf students in Al-Karak Governorate
Abstract
The present study aimed to verify the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral counseling program in developing self-esteem and reducing generalized anxiety among a sample of deaf students in Jordan. To achieve the goal of the study, a sample involving 20 male and female students was selected, who were intentinoally chosen from the Special Education Mixed-Gender Secondary Education School in Al-Karak Governorate, and they were distributed randomly into two groups: experimental group with 10 male and female students, and control group with 10 male and female students. The self-esteem scale and the generalized anxiety scale were used after confirming the psychometric characteristics of both of them, and a a cognitive-behavioral program consisting of 17 sessions was prepared. The results showed statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group in the level of self-esteem and generalized anxiety, which indicates the effectiveness of the counseling program in developing self-esteem and reducing generalized anxiety among deaf students. The two scales were re-applied sequentially to the members of the experimental group after one month, and the results did not show statistically significant differences between the post and the follow-up applications, which indicates that the impact of the counselling program remains. The study recommended that the teachers of deaf students should be trained on the program used in order to reduce anxiety and raise the level of self-esteem of their students.
